Testimonials

"Jay took me from not even being able to read music to winning the Winston Churchill Memorial Trophy which is awarded at one of the biggest highland games in North America. Jay is a perfectionist. His playing has been and continues to be an excellent example of bagpiping."

Andrew Lenz, Jr., Executive Secretary of the Western United States Pipe Band Association

Thank you very much for playing at our joint 80th birthday and turning it into a remarkable event. You play the pipes with a lot of skill and real sensitivity. The "meditation" medley at the end was just perfect. Keep up the good work.

Thank you again for participating with us at the Tor House garden party on May 3. Many of our guests, as well as our own people, have commented on the special addition of the bagpipe to the afternoon's festivities. Even those of us in the kitchen could enjoy the haunting sounds of the music as you played from Hawk Tower and throughout the gardens. We are grateful to you for your participation with us again this year. You have indeed become a Garden Party tradition!

Instruction:

Jay Salter has been my bagpipe instructor and mentor for seven years. He started me with scales and doublings and laid a solid foundation. We worked through the first tunes and he patiently put up with my clumsy approach to the music. He worked me from my practice chanter onto the Great Highland Bagpipes, and once again took his time getting me through the tough transition to a challenging instrument. He brought me into his band and so became my Pipe Major as well as instructor. This led to new challenges which again he adroitly handled with diligence and care. In 2006, I began competing with moderate success and numerous setbacks, but Jay guided me---and sometimes goaded me---and always kept me progressing in my playing. By 2008, my piping competitions were going better and I finished that year as the Grade 4 Season Champion in the Western United States Pipe Band Association. We have worked continuously, striving to tackle ever more difficult tunes and enjoy our time together in lessons and in band. I cannot say enough good things about Jay's instruction.
